Phone Not Charging? It Might Be the Port, Not the Cable

You plug in your phone before bed, wake up, and it is still at 12%. Or maybe it only charges when you hold the cable at a specific angle. Or it charges intermittently — sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

Before you panic and start shopping for a new phone, let us walk through what is actually happening and what you can do about it.

This is the number one cause of charging problems, and it is completely fixable without any parts at all.

Over time, lint from your pocket, dust, and debris pack into the charging port. When you plug in your cable, it cannot make full contact with the port's pins — so charging is slow, intermittent, or impossible.

How to check: Shine a flashlight into your charging port. If you see a compressed layer of gray or brown material at the bottom, that is your problem.

What to do: Use a wooden or plastic toothpick (never metal — you can damage the pins) to gently loosen and remove the debris. Work carefully and do not force anything. Many people are amazed at how much lint comes out.

If the port is clean but charging is still unreliable, the port itself may be damaged. Common causes include:

• Bent or broken pins — the small metal contacts inside the port can bend if a cable was inserted at an angle or with force
• Loose port connection — the port can become partially detached from the circuit board, especially after drops
• Corrosion — moisture exposure can corrode the port's contacts over time
• Physical damage — dropping the phone while a cable is plugged in can crack or break the port

• Cable feels loose or wobbly when plugged in
• Phone only charges at a specific angle
• Charging is very slow even with a fast charger
• Phone shows "accessory not supported" or similar error
• Port looks visibly damaged or discolored
• Wireless charging works but wired charging does not (confirms the port is the issue)

Charging port replacement is a moderately complex repair. The port is soldered to the logic board in some phones, or connected via a flex cable in others. Either way, it requires opening the phone, removing the old port, and installing a new one.

Apple switched from Lightning to USB-C with the iPhone 15. If you have an iPhone 14 or older, you have a Lightning port. iPhone 15 and newer use USB-C, as do most modern Android phones.

If your phone supports wireless charging (most iPhones from iPhone 8 onward, most flagship Androids), you can use a wireless charger as a temporary solution while you arrange a repair. It is slower than wired charging, but it will keep your phone alive.

This is not a permanent fix — wireless charging does not bypass the port for data transfer, and some features require a wired connection.
