5 Signs Your Phone Battery Needs Replacing

Your phone battery does not last forever. Most lithium-ion batteries are designed for 300–500 full charge cycles before they start degrading noticeably. For the average user, that is roughly two to three years of use.

The tricky part? Battery degradation is gradual. You might not notice it happening until your phone is barely making it through half a day. Here are the five clearest warning signs that it is time for a battery replacement.

This is the most obvious one. If you used to get through a full day on a single charge and now you are reaching for the charger by early afternoon, your battery capacity has dropped significantly.

A healthy battery holds close to 100% of its original capacity. Once it drops below 80%, Apple actually recommends replacement. Android phones do not have a built-in health percentage display, but the behavior is the same — shorter and shorter battery life over time.

This one is particularly frustrating. Your battery indicator shows 25%, and then — without warning — your phone goes dark. You plug it in and it boots back up at 25%.

This happens because the battery can no longer accurately report its charge level. The internal chemistry has degraded to the point where the phone cannot predict when it will actually run out of power. This is a clear sign the battery needs to go.

Some warmth during charging is normal. But if your phone gets uncomfortably hot — especially during light tasks like browsing or texting — that is a red flag.

A degraded battery works harder to deliver the same power output, generating excess heat in the process. Consistent overheating can also damage other components over time, so this is one sign you should not ignore.

Apple famously (and controversially) introduced battery throttling — slowing down the processor to prevent unexpected shutdowns caused by weak batteries. Android manufacturers have similar mechanisms.

This is the most urgent sign. A swollen or bulging battery is a safety issue. Lithium-ion batteries can swell when they degrade, and in rare cases, a severely swollen battery can rupture or catch fire.

On iPhone, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You will see a percentage representing your maximum capacity. Apple recommends replacement below 80%.

If you see the message "Your battery's health is significantly degraded," that is Apple telling you directly — it is time.

Android does not have a universal battery health screen, but you can dial *#*#4636#*#* on many Samsung devices to access a battery information menu. Third-party apps like AccuBattery can also track your battery health over time.
